Where is a good place to look for health insurance?
I am 22 years old and half to get off of my parents health insurance. What should I be prepared for?
Try Canada
Get a job! That way the employer pays 80% of the cost.
I just did an exhaustive look for health ins. Every state is different; I live in Illinois. I am 48 yrs old, so your rates will be cheaper! The choices are confusing and it is difficult to compare plans directly. There were good deals at Blue Cross, United Health, Aetna. I decided to take the Aetna with high deductible ($5,000!) but they give you a list of doctors to go to for $40 a visit and $15 for each generic prescription. That should get me over strep throat, without killing me for a monthly premium. All this for $135 per month.
My old plan was a $2500 deductible, no doctor coverage till deductible met, then $309 per month! (Time Insurance)
You can also get very cheap "temporary" plans for 6 months. This is useful if you are between college and your first real job. I had one once from my State Farm car insurance agent.
The best place of all to get health insurance if you have an ongoing health problem is from your job. If you are sick (say epilepsy with expensive meds) then get a good job in government or a big company like GM or Boeing! They will take very good care of you because your group is so large, and the company pays most of the premium.
Try www.ehealthinsurance.com. They give you a good overview, and will give you premium estimates. Every company wants to "underwrite" you, to make sure you aren't already sick. They don't typically make you take a physical, but want you to disclose all contacts with the medical establishment for the last 10 years.
Good luck and be patient with the phone people. They can be very helpful and knowledgeable or quite clueless!
IF U HAVE NO HEALTH PROBLEMS, I WOULD TRY UNITED HEALTHCARE, HUMANA, AETNA...LOOK FOR ONE WITH A LOW DEDUCTIBLE AND A COPAY. ALSO MAKE SURE THEY HAVE A PRESCRIPTION DRUG CARD! IMPORTANT! MEDS CAN GET REALLY EXPENSIVE.

Get a good plan for yourself since now you are 23 yrs, compare quotes and decide for yourself how much premium you can pay say maybe for life or auto or medical insurance etc,
