Moody's, A.M. Best, Standard and Poors, Fitch and Weiss (not my favorite) all rate companies for financial strength.
J.D. Powers also sometimes reports on insurance companies within terms of customer pleasure
Consumer Reports sometimes does insurance companies (although I don't always agree next to their criteria).
Your state insurance department may have some statitics on complaints.
As a website, I close to insure.com, although it is funded by people who want to market you something.

There are several third party insurance rating companies out here. One such company is Moodys - http://www.moodys.com Most insurance companies will post their rating, as long as its a good one.
