Is food spoilage cause by no electricity covered beneath homeowners ins?
My electricy has be over a little over 24 hrs. Is food spoilage covered by this covered by my homeowners insurance?
With some policies, yes. But its wise to keep hold of up with your policy to know these things because your carrier policy may not be one. You should read your insurance policy or call them to find out for sure.
Excellent question for your insurance company. If you own an active claim (for other damage) ask just about this item. If you don't, call the local claims bureau and ask them about this. Your agent can be kind as well. Now for the generality: Food spoliage is generally covered if the lead to of the power interruption is from an ON PREMISES interruption. Example, wind knock down tree which damages your meter or service panel. If the interruption is from OFF PREMISES interruption (out to an entire area), it is generally not covered. Some carrier write expanded or premier endorsements that may include some coverage back within the latter case, and/or increase the coverage contained by the first case. Again, inquire beside your agent and/or carrier to know for sure. If they will cover it, ask them what they would similar to you to do (can you shoot some digital photos and make an inventory, fairly than keeping the stinky spoiled food around if it will take them a few days/weeks to inspect?) Good luck. Not on the standard policy. Don't forget, you also hold a deductible. It IS, however, written into quite a few improvement endorsements - which you may or may not own. When it's written into an enhancement, usually the deductible is much lower for that coverage (refrigerated food spoilage coverage), or flat out waive.
Bottom line - you enjoy to ask your agent.
Answers: If the power outage be from a "covered peril" such as.
Windstorm, lightning etc.
if you have this encouragement on your policy it will and usually without deductible. telephone your agent or company to find out if you have it It may be, but they will probably enlighten you to file a claim beside the electric utility first. You might also examine what your policy deductible is.
Typically, the value of your spoiled food will be LESS than your deductable- I would focus. I mean, who keep $500-$1000 worth of parishible food in the fridge/Freezer? In any event, it MIGHT be but probably not worth persuing. Possibly - It may be covered if the rationale of the outage is a covered peril under your policy (ie storm, fire, etc). Check beside your agent to be sure.
