Why do you need a state inspection? You need a homeowner's insurance policy. Was your's cancelled because you had too many claims? Or did you not pay when due?
If you don't find a new policy quickly, your mortgage papers likely include a clause that allows the lender to choose one, pay for it, and charge it back to you. Because it may be one of their affiliated companies, you could pay several hundred more dollars than necessary.
I know this from formerly working with the NC State Banking Commission. A homeowner called to complain, but had no recourse.

talk to your agent
Answers:
Talk to your agent! They'll give you a list of exactly what the problems were. Also, prior to cancellation, the insurance company should have given you a list of things that had to be fixed/repaired/remedied, before they issued you the cancellation notice.
Typically, it would be making sure the roof is in good shape, having gutters, paint or siding on all exterior surfaces, no uneven pavements or broken stairs, no prohibited breed dogs/trampolines, no junk sitting around the yard, updated wiring, plumbing in good shape, all utilities turned on and working, handrails on all steps, porch with railing, stuff like that. It is potentially a LONG LONG LONG list. You're BEST off having your agent come out, and going over everything with you.
BUT, the state inspector will ALSO give you a list. Normally in MA, they give you 30 - 45 days to work through the items on the list, however, if it's extensive, they'll work with you prioritizing, and give you up to six months, as long as you get one or two things done every month. Except the dog and trampline, which would have to go immediately.
You can always ask for an exclusion to your policy and the company will not cover any lawsuit that is for your dogs bitting someone. If they exclude that from the policy they will typically reinstate the policy.
