If the cost of the repairs is above the limit set by whichever state you are in (in my area it is $300) there may be help for you. The department of motor vehicles in your state will have given you instructions how to go about getting this assistance when your car failed. The mechanic probably will also know and can guide you.
Emissions, like, getting your CAR EXHAUST system fixed? None. Just take the car off the road for a while, get a bus pass until you've saved enough for the repairs.
