Will this be enough for an insurance claim on a laptop?
I got burgled and my sony laptop was taken. I may have left the window open, although there are signs of forced entry as the open window was unsecrewed so that they could climb in. I contacted my insurer who are sending a loss adjustor round.
The worry I have is that I don't have the full receipt for the laptop - I have a friend who owns an IT company and he buys my pc's for me as I'm clueless. He has his AMEX credit card receipt which names the shop (micro anvika) and the amount, and then I have an invoice from his company with the details of the laptop. Will this be enough for the loss adjustor - will he want to see a full receipt from the shop? I dont know where I have put it and am starting to panic. Also will I be penalised for leaving a window open? I have personals possessions insurance.
you shouldn't need proof of purchase
and it's not subject to wear and tear - you should get full replacement value
btw i'd stick to saying that the window was forced open and not that it was left open - especially if it was a ground floor window! Good Luck!
I would say that the information you have would be enough, but remember they might look at the laptop and the depreciation to see if they will pay the full amount that you spent. Think of a car claim, they usually don't give you what you spent on the car, but what the car is now worth. Good luck and sorry to hear about your burglary.
I think you are ok. Regardless of what you use this laptop for. If this computer is yours, it qualifies as personal property.
I assume that you are claiming your laptop against your homeowners insurance. Remember that they will depreciate your equipment, in which case they could cover a fraction of what you paid. This depends on how long you had this computer.
Also remember that you must beat your deductible. Homeowner deductibles are usually quite high, so depending in you circumstances (how expensive of laptop), your insurance may not pay or if they do it will be little.
Best of Luck.
Sorry but it strongly looks like the lap top is used for work purposes - most household insurance do not cover items used solely or partially for work purposes. I would say that the window bit the least of your problems! By the way when this happened where had you gone? Why did they only take the lap top if I as I assume you are not there? Do you have any proof of the money you gave your friend or was that cash too!?

Leaving your window open is not a problem and the documentation you have sounds good. Take a look at your policy and make sure that you have replacement cost coverage. If you do, they will pay to replace with a computer of like, kind and quality. If you do not have replacement cost coverage they will pay for the actual cash value (what it is worth now).
